Amoxicillin is a type of penicillin. This is a moderate beta-lactam antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It absorbs easily and hence preferred by doctors. However, amoxicillin can be decomposed by beta-lactamase producing bacteria and can be given with clavulanic acid. Is available as a product of GlaxoSmithKline under the brand name, Amoxil.

Amoxicillin inhibits the synthesis the bacterial cell wall. The formula is known as amoxicillin – clavulanate (a name adopted by the United Kingdom). However, it is commonly known as its common name, and Clamoxyl Augmentin.

It is usually prescribed for women, children under 8 years, and people allergic to tetracycline and may be taken on an empty stomach. Amoxicillin is generally available in tablet form, which can take several weeks.

Who should avoid amoxicillin?

Any patient with these complications should not take the medication.

* If you have ever had an allergic reaction to penicillin or cephalosporins, always inform your doctor of such allergies.

* Tell your doctor if there is a problem with kidney or infectious mononucleosis. If you are taking amoxicillin, present problems as there are great risks of unwanted side effects.

* Amoxicillin passes into breast milk, it can cause a yeast infection, diarrhea, or allergic reactions in infants, although no serious damage was reported. If you are breastfeeding is important to seek the advice of your doctor before taking amoxicillin.

Some possible side effects

It is recommended that medical attention be sought immediately if any of the following symptoms while taking this medicine. The consequences of ignoring these side effects can be serious.

* Allergic reactions due to shortness of breath, closing the throat, hives, swelling of lips, tongue or face, skin rash or fainting.

* Convulsions

* Diarrhea serious

* Abdominal cramps

* Bleeding or bruising

Some less debilitating side affects also may be due to amoxicillin, such as mild nausea, vomiting and diarrhea or abdominal pain, yeast infection in the form of white spots on language, vaginal yeast infection, causing itching or vaginal discharge, sore mouth or tongue.

Of course, other Side effects are possible. So, if you detect any unusual symptoms after taking amoxicillin, tell your doctor without delay.
