Taking amoxicillin

About 25-30% of people in the United States are colonized by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, commonly called staph. The colonized people the bacteria from the skin or nose, but the insects do not cause infection. Staphylococci are among the most frequent causes of skin infections like boils or impetigo (Table 1). The infections are easily treated with antibiotics, topically or orally, depending on the severity of infection.
MRSA (Staphylococcus aureus resistant to methicillin) is a type of staph that is resistant aa-lactam antibiotics such as methicillin, penicillin and amoxicillin. Although 25-30% of the population is colonized with staph, approximately 1% is colonized with MRSA (CDC, 2007).
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2007), staphylococci are the most common causes of skin infections and are a frequent cause pneumonia, surgical wound infections and systemic infections (Box 2). Most MRSA infections occur in hospitals or other areas of care. However, in recent years we have seen an increase of MRSA in the community.
The CDC investigated groups acquired MRSA in the community (CA-MRSA) and identified the following factors associated with the spread of MRSA:
1. Close skin to skin
2. Cuts and scrapes
3. Contact with objects and surfaces contaminated
4. Overcrowding
5. Poor hygiene
You can protect yourself and your family against infection with MRSA by practicing good hygiene (CDC, 2007):
1. Wash hands with soap and water
2. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer
3. Keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered until complete recovery
4. Avoid contact with sores of others and bandages
5. Do not share items personal as towels, razors, and clothing
When you find a grain (or a small group of buttons), which increases gradually ie you could see the redness, swelling, pus or fever and pimples start to grow, you should consult your service as soon as possible. If no drainage present during the visit, your provider of health care to determine where the bacteria causing culture infection, and treated with an antibiotic. Always remember that it may take 1-3 days of antibiotic to start working, so do not worry if not see any improvement within 1-2 days. However, it deteriorates at any time, or no improvement after 3 days of treatment, should return to your health care provider to reevaluation.
The culture results are accompanied by sensitivity tests. This means after identifying the bacteria that cause infections, laboratory technicians to ensure that antibiotics are effective against the microbe. The doctor will review your treatment after receiving the laboratory results and whether the antibiotic should be changed, he or she will contact you.
Although MRSA is resistant to many antibiotics, there are still some antibiotics that are effective against this bacterium. In addition to antibiotics orally, you provider of health care in May suggest a special shower gel to reduce the number of bacteria in the skin.
Once you remove staph infection, which may return. Always follow the instructions of your health while undergoing treatment provider, and take preventive measures after the infection has disappeared.
